Tease: Coming up in ___________ minutes, when the shutdown could go into effect

Tonight at midnight the government will shut down unless lawmakers are able to reach some sort of stopgap bill to avoid it. Last night Chuck Schumer said that a deal had been reached and both the Senate and House will likely vote on a continuing resolution today to keep the government funded at current levels for a set period of time. Time to break out the duct tape and bailing wire and patch this thing together. (Additional Out) Ah the old ‘kick the can down the road’ approach, I know it well.

Tease: In ______ minutes, the latest Netflix obsession

Squid Game is the latest Netflix show to get a lot of buzz. It’s a South Korean fictional drama where contestants who are deeply in debt play children’s games in order to win a ton of cash. But, you guessed it, there’s a downside. If the contestant loses, they die. I give it two years before Fox makes this an actual reality show here in the US. (Additional Out) That’s some pretty high stakes Duck Duck Goose.

Tease: Coming up at _____, vaccine firings go into effect

Today is the deadline for healthcare workers in California to get vaccinated or get fired. Since the mandate was announced 800 additional workers at LA’s Cedars-Sinai Medical Center have been vaccinated bringing the hospitals vaccination rate up to 97%. When New York State announced a similar mandate in August 75% of health care workers had received a shot, by this week 92% have. Believe it or not, threatening someone’s livelihood tends to work. (Additional out) The other 8% will take their chances with the cow dewormer.

Tease: In _____ minutes, a Louisiana family wakes up multi-billionaires

A Louisiana family woke up to become the 25th richest people on the planet. Darren James received a frantic call from his wife over the weekend informing him that $50 billion had been deposited in their bank account. However Darren, who was previously in law enforcement, did the right thing and contacted Chase Bank to inform them of the error. The 47-year-old Baton Rouge native told Fox “It was there Saturday, Sunday, Monday and gone Tuesday’, adding so ‘I was a billionaire for four days.’ Because finders keepers isn’t an actual law. (Additional out) That’s when I would’ve told the bank, “Sorry, I’m gonna have to charge you a two million dollar convenience fee.’

Phone Topic/Web Poll: Bacon prices have skyrocketed and they are unlikely to go down anytime soon. Even accounting for inflation, bacon is more expensive for Americans than it has been in 40 years. The average price for bacon has jumped nearly 28% during the past 12 months. Supply chain issues and panic buying are to blame. What’s your go to way to cook bacon? Microwave, oven or stovetop?

Contest Tease: Coming up at _____________, who was originally supposed to play this role in an iconic early 2000’s comedy? The correct answer wins ________.

[Contest setup] Ben Stiller revealed the shocking original ‘Zoolander’ cast. In a recent profile with Esquire celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Ben Stiller/Owen Wilson classic Stiller, who directed the film, revealed that a young Jake Gyllenhaal was almost cast as Hansel. Who did Stiller say was originally supposed to play Mugatu, the role that ultimately went to Will Ferrell?

A: Christopher Walken

B: Andy Dick

C: Vince Vaughn

Answer: B, comedian Andy Dick was the first choice to play Mugatu. Which would’ve forever changed the film that taught us that ‘just because we have chiselled abs and stunning features, it doesn’t mean that we too can’t die in a freak gasoline fight accident.’

[DIY Feature] Throwback Thursday Name That Year: I’ll describe the events of a year and the first person to call in and correctly identify it wins ___________. If no one gets it I’ll move on to more clues.

2nd break clues: Elvis Presley died, Jimmy Carter takes over as President, and this movie hit theaters (Saturday Night Fever Clip)
