Tease: Coming up in ___________ minutes, vaccines are working

The number of new cases are declining sharply in countries that have vaccinated a large share of residents. That’s the situation in Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Britain. Covid cases are also declining here in the US, where we’re not as far along as those three countries but well ahead of most. It’s good that we’re leading in something other than Covid cases for a change. (Additional out) So, let’s keep putting those shots in arms so one day we can cough in public without everyone diving for cover.

Tease: In ______ minutes, Oscar nominations set a record

70 women received a total of 76 Oscar nominations, according to the Academy that’s a new record. Plus, two women, Emerald Fennell and Chloe Zhao were nominated in the directing category in the same year for the first time. Netflix’s ‘Mank’ led among nominated films with 10 nods including Best Picture. Despite the fact that no one watched it. (Additional out) Thanks to the pandemic, this is the first year I’ve seen literally everything that was nominated.

Tease: Coming up at _____, a feel-good story about a teacher and his former student

A substitute teacher living in his car in California got a birthday surprise of $27,000 from a former student. Steven Nava started a GoFundMe campaign last week after seeing Jose Villarruel, a beloved former substitute teacher, living in his car. 77-year-old Mr. V, as all his students called him, told CNN, “It was extremely exciting, totally unexpected and great.” His former student Nava said, “Teachers play a huge part in our lives. I felt like I needed to repay the favor.” I love it when GoFundMe is used for a good cause and not just to get somebody’s awful invention off the ground. (Additional out) Which makes me feel terrible about how we treated substitute teachers when I was in school.

Tease: In _____ minutes, how many steps a day researchers say we need to get in to reap the health benefits

4,400 steps a days is enough to improve your health. That’s compared to only walking around 2,700 steps a day. According to researchers at Harvard Medical School, the more steps people walked the lower the risk of dying was, before leveling off at around 7,500 steps a day. No additional benefits were seen with more steps. Further proof my FitBit is a jerk for making me feel terrible if I don’t get in 10,000 steps a day. (Additional out) At least until the next study reverses those findings.

Phone Topic/Web Poll: I recently found out a friend has 77 pictures of himself in his house. Granted not all of those are just pictures of him, some are with his family, but still 77 pictures sounds absurd to me. What do you think, how many pictures of yourself should you have in your home?
