Tease: Coming up in ___________ minutes, the next crisis effecting Texans

The power is back on for most Texans, but now nearly half of residents there are having to boil their water. Water treatment plants going down and burst pipes have led to a critically low water supply. Meanwhile Texas Senator Ted Cruz is under fire for flying to Cancun for vacation while his constituents were suffering. He has since flown home early and called his decision a mistake. Funny how they only realize that after the public backlash. (Additional out) Not a good look for someone planning another unsuccessful presidential run in 2024.

Tease: In ______ minutes, how and where a woman got bit on the butt by a bear

An Alaska woman was bit on the butt by a bear from below while trying to use an outhouse. Shannon Stevens told the AP, “I got out there and sat down on the toilet and immediately something bit my butt right as I sat down”. Her brother Erik heard the screams, ran to the outhouse, lifted the toilet seat and saw a bear staring back at him. Luckily, Shannon only suffered a minor wound. I gotta side with the bear on this one, if you’re about to poop on my head, I’m gonna bite you too. (Additional out) But I’m guessing she’ll double-check every toilet she uses for the rest of her life.

Tease: Coming up at _____, study finds a single shot of this vaccine is 85% effective

A single shot of the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine is 85% effective according to a new study. The Israeli study published in The Lancet medical journal supports the controversial strategy of speeding up immunizations by delaying the second shot. That strategy has been adopted by the UK and considered by a handful of other countries. The second dose jumps the efficacy up to 95%. Either way though, its good news. Especially if you own Pfizer stock. (Additional out) Now all we have to do is thaw out and start administering shots again.

Tease: In _____ minutes, the first endangered American animal to be cloned

Scientists have successfully cloned a black-footed ferret. This marks the first time an endangered US animal has been cloned. Elizabeth Ann was created from the frozen cells of Willa, another black-footed ferret who lived more than 30 years ago. The rare ferrets were declared extinct in 1979 before a Wyoming rancher discovered a small population living on his land. Scientists hope Elizabeth Ann will eventually be able to mate and help rescue her species from the brink of extinction. No pressure though, you’re just here to literally save all of your kind. (Additional out) This is where it starts, and we all know it ends with us being eaten by cloned dinosaurs.

Phone Topic/Web Poll: Perseverance has flawlessly landed itself on Mars after the 292.5 million-mile journey from Earth. NASA’s most advanced rover to date, nicknamed Percy, sent back her first images immediately after touchdown. She’ll now begin to explore Jezero Crater, the site where a 3.9 billion year-old lake existed, to search for microfossils in the soil there. The historic mission might finally tell us if there was ever life on the red planet. What do you think, was there ever life on Mars?

Contest Tease: Coming up at _____________, who’s ahead of this NBA star on the all-time list? The correct answer wins ________.

[Contest setup] LeBron James reached another milestone last night as he passed 35,000 career points scored. That puts him third on the list of all-time NBA scorers and the youngest to hit 35,000 points. Who’s number one on that career scoring list?

A: Karl Malone

B: Michael Jordan

C: Kareem Abdul-Jabar

Answer: C, fellow Laker Kareem Abdul-Jabar still sits at number one 3,370 points ahead of King James. Although to be fair, I’m pretty sure Lebron would’ve scored 50 points a game if he’d played when Kareem did.
